Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) was born in Midlothian and the son of a portrait artist.  He briefly attended St John's Wood School of Art in London, though his time there was cut short by the death of his father.  He specialised in painting wildlife and birds in the wild, and his work often depicted the dramatic scenery of the Scottish Highlands in the background.  He illustrated a number of books on natural history and sporting subjects. Thorburn moved to Surrey following his marriage to Constance Mudie and remained there for the rest of his life.  He refused to use electric light for his work, preferring the quality of natural light or lamp or candle.
